ICOM CAT problem on virtual COM ports

I run WSPR without problems on Kenwood TS480 (CAT on RS-232 link end to end). Today I tried an ICOM706MK2G. The rig does not talk RS-232, I use G4ZLP USB to serial interface to connect it to a PC. It works fine under Ham Radio Deluxe, but fails under WSPR 2.0 r1714. TX/RX switching (virtual COM3) works fine, CAT (virtual COM4) does not. The error message is: failure to open COM port. It seems that K1JT may talk directly (BIOS?) to the nominated COM port rather than through Windows calls, which SHOULD be capable of handling virtual ports. Is there anything I can change (other than getting more hardware, like CI-V to RS-232 converter)? Sorry if this is an old and known problem - I browsed through 10 latest pages of the forum and found nothing.
