Mobile WSPR Receiver - auto-update of MyGrid location?

I may have the opportunity to fit WSPR receivers onto one research ship expedition to the Arctic this summer, and on another research ship from Europe to the Antarctic later in the year. While I'm familiar with the use of GPS to automate the sending of the MyGrid location when transmitting, I've not been able to find out how to automatically update the MyGrid location when receiving.

I use WSPR 3.9 r2840 on a Raspberry Pi under Debian Wheezy and WSJT-X 1.7.0 devel on a Pi under Debian Jessie.
I have tried manually editing the MyGrid entry in files WSPR.INI for WSPR 3.9 r2840 and file WSJT-X.ini for WSJT-X 1.7.0 devel BUT these edits do not reflect back to settings in the program setup after restart. Rather, these entries in the ini files seem to be written to, rather than read from.

Anyone tackled this issue? While I'm happy to write/obtain the code to generate a 4 character MyGrid location on the Rasp Pi from a GPS NEMA string I lack the knowledge to make this location known to the wspr / wsjt-x programs.

73, in hope ...
