LF and MF Dx'ing in WSPR

Hello,

I've recently looked at the spot reports of stations transmitting and reporting on the LF (2200 ?) and MF (630 ?) bands and I'm seeing a considerable amount of DX'ing going on.

I'm somewhat interested in getting involved in trasmitting and / or reporting in these two bands. But I've heard that specialized equipment is needed to really make it worthwhile.

So, I'm curious to know what kind of power outputs and antennas are being used for the transmitting? Is it true you really need to be putting out 500watts or more to even get your signal out there on the LF and MF bands?

I'm very interested in getting involved in these two bands, so I would appreciate some answers, especially from those people actively involved in working on these two bands, especially in WSPR mode.

Thanks.
